The journey to conception is a long, difficult road...
Terms of use
Infertility has become taboo.  Often referred to as a silent disorder, it is rarely discussed.  An
increasing
number of celebrities are stepping forward and talking about their battles with infertility.  The issue of
infertility is being portrayed in the media more and more.  For some reason, people are more
sympathetic when celebrities are having trouble because it's in the news.  This gives us a window of
opportunity to inform the public of our plight.  Many people do not think there should be an infertility
mandate because they do not know the pain that childlessness could cause.  However, people
sympathize more for people that come into their homes every week and for people that they idolize.
Sometimes the best advocacy is simple exposure.

Meet our unofficial Infertility Spokespersons. Those in the public spotlight who are brave
enough
to talk about their struggles with infertility.

TV

For the 2005-2006 TV Season, we have awarded the NIR award (Not In Reality- Pronounced "Near"-
as in so close, yet so far away).  The NIR goes to shows that address infertility, yet unrealistically.
Yes, we realize that these are fictional shows, but believe that infertility needs to be more accurately
portrayed in the media.

The NIR award for Infertility goes to Sun and Jin from Lost.  A flashback revealed that Sun and Jin
were unable to conceive due to Jin's infertility.  They crashed on the mysterious island with magical
healing properties and Sun is suddenly pregnant.

The NIR award for adoption goes to Carlos and Gabrielle on Desperate Housewives.  After finding
that they would not conceive, they found a birth mother in less than a week and had a baby the next
week.  (Most couples wait over a year) After losing that baby, they managed to convince their
housekeeper to be a surrogate.  She is immediately pregnant.

The Baby Lab on Discovery Health documents the difficult work at a fertility clinic in St. Louis.

Introduced for the 2005 season,
Inconceivable.  A dramady about the hijinks (yes, you read that
correctly) at a fertility clinic. It was cancelled after airing only a few times.

On the FOX show, Boston Public, a teacher decides to undergo IVF by withdrawing money from her
pension.

On Friends, Monica and Chandler have trouble conceiving, so they must adopt a baby.

On the daytime soap, Guiding Light, Dinah discovers that her in vitro treatment worked, and she is
pregnant with Cassie and Edmund's child.
